It Started with a Memory: Our Founder on Why We Need You

The Libraries for Ethiopia Fund wasn’t born in a boardroom; it was born from a memory. “I remember spilling coffee on my teacher’s only textbook as a child,” says Kassahun (Kass) Kebede, our founder and president. “The shame of that moment, the feeling of having damaged something so precious and rare, never left me. It’s the fuel for this mission.”

Today, LiFEF is driven by a passionate Board of Directors who all serve as unpaid volunteers. From professors and fundraisers to community leaders, each member dedicates their time and expertise because they believe in a future where no child feels the scarcity of knowledge that Kass experienced. Our entire operation is lean, ensuring that every possible dollar goes directly to building libraries and buying books.

But we can’t do it alone. As we grow, we are seeking more volunteers to help with fundraising, grant writing, and social media outreach. Whether you can give an hour a week or help with a single event, your passion can help us write the next chapter of this story. If you believe in the power of books to change a life, we invite you to connect with us and join our mission.
